The H.I.R.E. Trades & Farming Academy

Build the person.
Teach the craft.
Give the gift.

A rural-to-urban learning model where life skills, skilled trades, sustainable farming, and ethical leadership are taught as one connected practice.

H.I.R.E. seal: Honesty, Integrity, Respect, and Equality

Learn it.Live it.Give it.

01 / What it does

Education for the
whole human being.

The Academy is not a trade school with character added on the side. It is a place where character, craft, and contribution are formed together.

Learners discover how they are built, develop practical abilities, and use those abilities to strengthen a family, a workplace, and a community. The aim is not simply to know more. It is to become dependable, capable, and useful to others.

02 / Integrated training

Three paths.
One standard.

Every lesson connects behavior to workmanship and workmanship to service. The person who learns the skill also learns how to carry it.

01

Life formation

Learn how to stand.

Character is practiced through real decisions, responsibility, pressure, communication, and service.

  • Self-awareness and honest reflection
  • Discipline, accountability, and resilience
  • Communication, teamwork, and conflict
  • Leadership, service, and life planning
02

Skilled trades

Learn how to build.

Hands-on training turns responsibility into useful capability and opens a path toward dignified work.

  • Electrical, welding, plumbing, and carpentry
  • Tool knowledge and worksite safety
  • Craftsmanship and problem-solving
  • Apprenticeship, employment, and enterprise
03

Land & food

Learn how to sustain.

Working with the land teaches patience, stewardship, systems thinking, and the value of producing what people need.

  • Regenerative soil and no-till practices
  • High tunnels and season extension
  • Permaculture, water, and crop diversity
  • Rural and urban food systems

03 / Rural to urban

Learn with the land.
Bring it home.

The model begins with immersive, hands-on learning in Sullivan County, where learners can see how tools, trades, food, water, soil, and human effort work as connected systems.

Those lessons return to New York City through gardens, rooftops, vacant lots, repair projects, community partnerships, and practical work that meets local needs.

04 / The standard in practice

H.I.R.E. is not a class.
It is how the work is done.

H

Honesty

Name what you know, what you do not know, and what the work requires.

I

Integrity

Protect the standard even when the instructor, employer, or customer is not watching.

R

Respect

Honor the person, the tool, the land, the team, and the work itself.

E

Equality

Give every learner fair access to instruction, responsibility, and the chance to earn trust.

05 / The Gift

Pressure does not
create the gift.
It reveals it.

Gold once thought lost can remain in the soot of a furnace, waiting to be recovered. The Academy carries that image into human development: struggle is not proof that a person has no value. With truth, guidance, practice, and opportunity, what is already within can be refined and made useful.

The Academy’s charge

“The gift is the reason you have been forged. Find your gift, then give it to the world.”

06 / The standard at the entrance

A Good Life

This is where the entrance plaque belongs. Before a learner touches a tool or enters a field, it establishes why the work matters and who the Academy is asking each person to become.

It speaks to every human being—not to status, identity, or superiority—and ends with the responsibility to pass the gift forward.

A Good Life

It is measured by the good we choose to give.
Learn it. Live it. Give it.

The vision is clear.
The institution is being built carefully.
